Care, maintenance and cleaning procedures
Accidents happen, but how you handle them can make all the difference in maintaining your carpet's quality. Acting quickly increases the chances of avoiding permanent stains. Whether you're dealing with solids, liquids, or tougher spills, here's a step-by-step guide to help you act quickly and effectively.
There are typically two main types of accidents you might encounter on your carpet, and each requires a specific approach: solids and liquid spills. Here’s what to do:
Types of accidents and how to handle them
-
Gently remove the solid material using an appropriate utensil (like a spoon), avoiding excessive abrasion.
Use a mild detergent, water, and a sponge to lightly scrub the area.
Follow the drying advice outlined under the ‘Liquid spills’ section.
-
Place a towel or colourfast cloth directly onto the spill.
Gently step on the towel with both feet to absorb as much moisture as possible.
Repeat this process until the area is mostly dry to the touch.
Types of spills and cleaning procedures
-
Act promptly. Scrape or brush away the spill, using a vacuum cleaner if necessary. Remove residual liquid with a cotton towel.
Lightly scrub the area with water and a sponge.
Dry the area with a towel and allow it to air-dry by opening windows or ensuring good ventilation.
-
Scrape or brush off the spill without delay. Use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner if available. Soak up any residual spill using a cotton towel.
Wash the affected area gently with a natural detergent like wool wash or dishwashing liquid (avoid bleach or brighteners). Use a soft brush to lightly penetrate the carpet’s fibres (for example an old toothbrush or gentle dishwashing brush).
Remove excess fluid and repeat the process until the spill is diluted. Focus on working from the edges of the stain toward the centre while feathering the outer edges to blend with the rest of the carpet.
Dry the area properly — dark spots may linger until the carpet fully dries, which can take hours or even days depending on ventilation. Avoid applying direct heat.
NOTE: Do not over scrub the carpet as this can remove the natural colour.
-
For larger spills we recommend that you immediately have the carpet cleaned using water extraction. The spill area will need to be worked hard and then feathered out immediately around it.
-
Begin by brushing off the spill or using a wet/dry vacuum to remove as much as possible. Use a cotton towel to absorb residual liquid and press down firmly to ensure maximum absorption.
Wash with natural detergents (for example wool or dishwashing liquid), avoiding bleach or brightening agents. Carefully scrub the area with a small brush (for example an old toothbrush or gentle dishwashing brush), working from the edges inward, and use water to dilute the stain. Remove excess water immediately after cleaning.
Repeat the process until the stain fades. Allow the area to dry naturally under good ventilation but avoid direct heat. Dark spots may linger until the carpet fully dries, which can take hours or even days depending on ventilation. Avoid applying direct heat.
For larger spills, consider professional cleaning and request that the affected area be carefully blended with the rest of the carpet.
NOTE: Do not over scrub the carpet as this can remove the natural colour.
-
Gently wipe away excess material and soak up any remaining liquid using a cotton towel. Use pointy-nosed pliers or a knife to carefully remove hardened residue, such as wax. For safety, ensure the area is ventilated and free from open flames during cleaning.
Use appropriate cleaning agents based on the spill type:
• White spirits or mineral turpentine for bitumen or oil-based stains
• Alcohol for ballpoint ink
• Acetone for nail polishUse a small brush (for example an old toothbrush or gentle dishwashing brush) to penetrate the weave. Cotton buds or a clean towel may also be useful to apply the solvent, working from the edges inward. Allow the solvent to evaporate naturally.
Repeat the process as necessary until the stain is removed. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first to avoid spreading the stain or causing damage.
Once dry, a light area may appear, which is often due to thorough cleaning. To restore consistency, water extraction cleaning is recommended.
Important notes on carpet care
Preserving the beauty and integrity of your carpet is easy when you follow these simple tips. For large spills or stubborn stains, you may wish to contact a professional cleaning service to ensure your carpet returns to its original condition.
Avoid over-scrubbing, as this can damage fibres or remove natural colours.
Always act quickly to minimise the spread and impact of a stain.
Proper ventilation will speed up drying times, but do not use direct heat on the carpet.
